Northern Celts on the March! Rotherham A&B Meet

On January 25th and 26th the Northern Celts travelled to Sheffield to the Rotherham A&B meet. The meet was held at Ponds Forge’s 50m pool, the home of the British Championships.

Around 70 Celts swimmers from Buckley, Banger, Ruthin and Holywell made up the team.

Lots of questions about the team from other clubs and we explain that we are a group of small teams who get together trying to promote inclusion in North Wales swimming. Again, lots of comments on how good the team looks in their Blue and Gold. We always talk about the warm-up sessions as the lanes look like a sea of Gold swim caps!

Holywell contingent : –

A great start to the weekend, with the team focused on putting their stamp on the meet. From our youngsters aged 9, right through the age groups to our over 17s; all swimming to their best capabilities. Coaches discussed how good our youngster’s technique looked and our older swimmers gave some stand out swims! We talk about how they break up the swim into processes and they didn’t disappoint. Start middle and finish all done well under pressure.

A lovely get together with many Celts swimmers after day one at the Kommune. The restaurant is situated across the road from the Premier Inn, offering several diverse kitchens including Thai, Mexican, Italian, English, American, Japanese to name some.

After a meal and a reminisce on the days racing, it was an early night for the swimmers so they could be ready for day 2, and more fast racing.

The Celts team gave their all on day 2, swimmers hit some very good PBs helping the Celts secure the win for the 2025 Top Team Shield – Well done team!

Congratulations to Medi Mellor and Emily M’Keown who shared the overall top female award scoring identical points. Both girls won a top girl shield – Well done girls!

About Terry Boardman

I have been coaching at Holywell ASC for nearly 19 years, beginning as a volunteer when my two sons swam for the club. After earning my Level 1 coaching qualification in 2005, I progressed to Level 2 and became head coach in 2010. In 2013, I achieved my UKCC Level 3 Senior Coaching Certificate and completed a degree in Sports and Exercise Science to deepen my understanding of the sport.

I’ve gained valuable experience from renowned coaches and programs, including Swim Wales, British Swimming’s S&C coach Barry Shillabeer, and mentoring from industry experts like James Stannard and Barry Healey. I also hold training in disability coaching and am a deaf-registered coach.

My coaching philosophy spans all levels, from entry to performance and masters swimming, focusing on skill development, inclusion, and following British Swimming’s Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model. My goal is to empower swimmers to achieve their aspirations through a holistic approach that combines technical skills, personal growth, and life skills.
